Area athletes post strong finishes at Jim Basye Relays

Belmond-Klemme, Hampton-Dumont-CAL and West Fork had boys and girls teams competing Friday, May 1, at the Jim Basye Co-Ed Relays, while South Hardin was represented in the girls meet.
On the girls side, West Fork led the area teams with a fourth-place finish. South Hardin placed seventh, Hampton-Dumont-CAL was 10th and Belmond-Klemme finished 14th.

West Fork girls Claim Cowgirl Relays Class B crown

The West Fork girls track and field team turned in a strong all-around performance Tuesday night, winning Class B of the Cowgirl Relays with 164 points.
 

Hampton-Dumont-CAL sweeps Charles City in soccer doubleheader

The Hampton-Dumont-CAL Bulldogs swept Charles City in a soccer doubleheader Thursday night during the “Kick the Stigma” event, with the girls earning a 3-1 victory and the boys outscoring the Comets 7-1.

Athlete of the Week: Victoria Flomo

This week’s Athlete of the Week is Victoria Flomo.
Flomo, a foreign exchange student from Liberia who’s staying with the Schirmer family in Hampton, plays soccer for H-D-CAL. And she loves it, she said. According to her, the sport is all about passion and teamwork.

AGWSR’s Koop retiring from coaching football

James Koop recently retired from his duties as the head football coach at AGWSR. He was the program’s head coach for 10 seasons, and spent 27 seasons total among Northwestern College, AGWSR, Alden and Northeast Hamilton.
 
When he took over as the head coach for his alma mater, he had a mission to positively impact student-athletes beyond the game.

Athlete of the Week: Talia Pommrehn

West Fork freshman Talia Pommrehn wasted little time making school history.

 

Pommrehn broke the school record in the 100-meter dash at the season-opening meet March 30 in St. Ansgar, finishing in 13.26 seconds. The previous mark of 13.33 was set by Hailey Clausen in 2018.

 

The record-setting performance came in West Fork’s first outdoor meet of the 2025-26 season.

 

Hampton-Dumont-CAL Boys Track and Field Season Preview

With indoor track and field underway, the outdoor Hampton-Dumont-CAL track and field season is upon us, and the Bulldogs are ready to get the season started. In 2025, the Bulldogs placed in the top five in five of their nine outdoor track meets, with their best placing being placing third in the Jim Basye Coed Relays.

The Hampton-Dumont-CAL girls track and field season is underway, and the Bulldogs will be led by first-year head coach Brittany Stevens. Coach Stevens takes over for Nicole Donnenworth and discussed the direction she wants the program to go.

The Hampton-Dumont-CAL boys soccer team will look to build off of a solid 20225 season. Last season, the Bulldogs had a record of 10-4-3 on the season and 6-3 in conference play. The Bulldogs defeated the Charles City Comets by a score of 7-1 on May 20, 2025 in the first round of the Class 2A Region 2 playoffs before losing to the Aplington-Parkersburg Falcons by a score of 7-1 in the second round on May 27, 2025.

The Hampton-Dumont-Girls basketball team will be led by first year head coach Jackie Finley for the 2026 season. The girls' team had a record of 0-14-1 last season and have not won a game since the 2023 season. Coach Finley discussed how the girls can get over the hump and collect that first win this season and be overall more competitive in games.

West Fork Boys Track and Field Season Preview

The 2026 West Fork boys track and field season is just around the corner and the Warhawks will look to build on the success they had last season. The Warhawks finished in the top five in five of their 10 outdoor meets last season and qualified one athlete for state. Xavier Haller qualified for state as a senior in the high jump last year and was part of a group of seniors who were a big part of the team's success last season.

After a strong 2025 season, the West Fork girls track and field team will look to have similar success in the 2026 season. The Warhawks qualified nine girls for the state meet and had seven top three finishes in meets as a team, including placing second in the Top of Iowa-East Conference track meet and third in the state qualifier meet.

Bulldogs Boys' Season Ends with Loss to Comets

ALLEMAN - The Hampton-Dumont-CAL boys basketball team's season has come to an end after a 78-50 loss to the North Polk Comets in the first round of the Class 3A District 2 tournament on Monday, Feb. 23. The Bulldogs fell behind 19-4 at the end of the first quarter and were never able to recover. Despite the season coming to an end, the Bulldogs improved their win total from four wins last season to seven wins this season.

Three Warhawks Selected to Top of Iowa-East All-Conference Teams

Three members of the West Fork girls basketball team were selected to the Top of Iowa-East All-Conference teams. Senior Brylee Dickman and sophomore Zada Huff were selected to the second team all-conference, while junior Evelyn Hitzhusen was selected to the honorable mentions team.
