The Hampton Senior Citizens Center has received a $10,000 donation from First Bank Hampton to help pay for a major kitchen ventilation upgrade and support the center’s ongoing operations.

The donation, made Thursday through the A.M. & Helen Saylor Foundation, brings the center more than halfway toward its fall fundraising goal, according to board Treasurer Vicki Claypool.

SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Volunteer Fire Department held its annual fall pork loin supper Sunday, Oct. 4, at 310 W. Gilman St. in Sheffield.

The free-will donation supper was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Community members attended the event, which also featured two of the department’s newest trucks on display outside.

Families bringing children to the courthouse in Franklin and Butler counties now have a new resource to help make those visits a little easier.

Leslyee’s Library is a nonprofit organization that places bookshelves filled with free children’s books in county courthouses. The organization made stops in Franklin and Butler counties Wednesday, adding bookcases to both courthouses.

WAVERLY — Nearly 300 tenor and bass singers from across the Midwest gathered at Wartburg College Saturday, Oct. 3, for the annual RitterSing Vocal Festival, with 18 students from Hampton-Dumont CAL participating in the daylong choral event.

Briggs Gruelke and Addison Aalbers were crowned Hampton-Dumont-CAL homecoming king and queen Friday during the Bulldogs’ homecoming festivities.

The coronation took place during a community pep rally following the homecoming parade, with students, families and community members gathering to celebrate.

The Franklin General Hospital Auxiliary is marking 70 years of supporting the hospital and community, with an anniversary open house planned for Thursday, Oct. 8 in Hampton.

The Hampton City Council continued discussions Monday on proposed policies for data centers and e-bike use within the city.

NIACOG Senior Planner John Robbins reviewed revisions to a proposed Comprehensive Plan amendment addressing data centers. Robbins said the plan would establish land-use policies, goals and strategies that could later be used when developing a specific data center ordinance.

Michelle Schaefer, who retired from First Security Bank as Assistant Vice President/Retail Banking Supervisor in June of this year, was recently honored by the Iowa Bankers Association for more than 50 years of service in banking. The award was presented to Michelle during the IBA Annual Convention on Monday, September 21 st in Des Moines. She was one of 24 individuals recognized for achieving the 50-year service milestone.

Hampton — The Franklin County Board of Supervisors met for their regular weekly session at the courthouse on Tuesday, Sept. 29. Public comments opened the morning session with resident Larry Sailer addressing the board on zoning topics. Sailer is the Republican nominee for Supervisor in District 1—a seat currently held by Gary McVicker, who is not seeking re-election.

For many older adults in Hampton and the surrounding area, the Hampton Senior Citizens Center is about much more than a place to have lunch.

It’s a place to meet friends, play cards, enjoy an ice cream, take part in activities — and, for some seniors who can no longer easily get out on their own, a place that helps provide a hot meal and a connection to the community.

A new cottonwood tree now marks the site of Franklin County’s historic Sentinel Tree.

The original Sentinel Tree, located near Quail Avenue and 110th Street northwest of Geneva, was removed in January after standing for roughly 200 years.

Hampton-Dumont-CAL is celebrating homecoming this week with a full schedule of activities leading up to Friday night’s football game.

The week includes daily dress-up themes. Monday is Anything But a Water Bottle Day, followed by Generations Day on Tuesday, Color Day on Wednesday, Country vs. Country Club Day on Thursday and Spirit Day on Friday.
