Services That Are Good for Our Community
We’ve talked a couple times in past weeks about the services that we provide to the Community because they are required by the Iowa Code. But, did you know there are several that we offer just because they are good for our community?! There are several and while we believe in the importance of them, I would be lying if I also didn’t say that they are the first ones to be discussed when we talk about budget cuts, restrictions, etc.
First up is Conservation. It is not required that we staff and fund a Conservation
Department, but we can all agree that they provide great services. Of course, we have numerous parks & recreational areas along with reserves that bring value to our lives here in Franklin County. Our Conservation Department also operates two campgrounds that help bring in revenue to the County. Maynes Grove Lodge is also operated by Conservation and provides a spectacular spot for graduation receptions, weddings, class reunions, and more. In addition to that, the Conservation employees work hard with schools, libraries, and other groups educating our young ones. They provide so many services, it’s hard to put them all into one paragraph. Interested in having them come speak to your group or work with your group?! Call Ned at 641-456-4375.
Next up is Home Care or Home Health. This department is overseen by the Board of Health and is a great service that residents can use to remain in their home longer as they age or have mental & physical restrictions. They can also provide rehab support services, relieve family members who are caregivers, and help facilitate a transition from the hospital or nursing facility to home. If you’d like more info, call Deb at 641-456-5824.
The Recorder’s office in the Courthouse also serves as a passport agent, which is simply a service they provide. In fact, when you apply for a passport with them, we don’t get to keep any of the money you pay (unless you have them take your photo).
We are simply a pass-through agent for the Federal government. Need a passport or have questions? Call them at 641-456-5675.
Franklin County also owns and maintains the building that the Franklin County Food Pantry is housed in. We pay for the insurance, utilities, and any repairs that may be needed. The Supervisors recognize the important service the Food Pantry volunteers provide to the residents of the County, which is why they continue to fund this.
Finally, the Board of Supervisors provide support to many different groups, organizations, and causes within the Community. They provide financial support to the Franklin County Fair, Franklin County Historical Society, Healthy Harvest of North Iowa, Hampton Senior Center, and more! They understand the importance of so many groups within our community and want to support them as long as they are financially able. Unfortunately, as funding continues to change, supporting each of these groups and departments becomes harder and harder. I, the Auditor, am dedicated to working with legislators to continue to be able to fund them, but if you believe in these services, I urge you to contact our legislators and let them know how important they are to our Community! Questions about mandated services vs those that aren’t?! I’m always happy to answer questions! Until next time…
