La Luz Centro Cultural was recently named Organization of the Year by the Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce.

The announcement was made by City Councilor Jerre Grefe, who serves on the Promotions Committee, at the council meeting last week. La Luz’s mission is to promote cultural awareness and diversity with hospitality and supportive services for all.

Father Kevin Earleywine, who serves as the Vice President of La Luz’s board, said he’s happy to see the organization honored in this way.

“Christ says love our neighbor and the reality is many of our neighbors are immigrants,” Father Earleywine said. “Having a place where Spanish speakers can come and be connected to the services available to them is what La Luz does and I think that is a great thing to have. It’s a practical way of loving our neighbor.”

According to La Luz Centro Cultural Associate Director Janette Acolt, the non-profit was first established by the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (PBVM) in 2013 before transitioning its focus to community-based leadership in 2018.

“Over the past decade, we have strived to meet the diverse needs of our community through various programs and services, fostering a welcoming environment for everyone,” Acolt said. “La Luz Centro Cultural has been a beacon of support and cultural awareness for the community in North Central Iowa since its inception.”

Last year, La Luz continued to make a significant impact with a range of programs and events, including Gran Festival, Dia del Niño, Back to School night, Community Block Party, Dia de Los Muertos, Thanksgiving Drive-thru Food pantry, Ignite the Night Food Pantry, Franklin County Arts Council banquet and Kids Christmas party. Some of their regular programs include after-school programs for children, English classes for adults, a regular food pantry and immigration seminars. The after-school program is for children 5 to 18 years of age.

“Our cultural events celebrated the rich heritage and traditions of our community, bringing people together through music, dance, and food,” she said. “Our adult English classes saw increased participation, helping community members improve their language skills and enhance their opportunities. Additionally, we provided vital immigration services, assisting individuals and families with legal support and resources.”

Acolt said that they saw an increase in demand for social services last year, which they responded to with more resources.

“Our food pantry ensured that families had access to nutritious food, while our social service navigation helped individuals connect with essential services and support systems,” she said. “As we enter our twelfth year, La Luz Centro Cultural remains dedicated to growing and adapting to the evolving needs of our community, continuing to be a pillar of support and cultural enrichment in North Central Iowa.”
