CAL Students Serve Latin, Mexican Dishes During Annual Dinner

The fifth and sixth graders at CAL Elementary held their annual farm-to-table dinner at Coulter Community Center on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

CAL teacher Leslie Pralle Osborn, who coordinates the event every year, told the community members who stopped by that night that the children had been working hard on their Mexican and Latin-inspired dishes.

On the menu for the night: horchata as the beverage, chips with guacamole and queso as the appetizer, tamales as the entree, elote and cilantro lime rice as the sides and alfajores for dessert.

The students formed different groups to tackle the food for the night — one for appetizers, one for drinks, one for the entree, and one for dessert. That night, the children could be seen helping in the kitchen and serving food to their customers.

"We had a lot of students who were excited to share dishes that their families eat at home," said coordinator Leslie Pralle Osborn.

Tickets sold for 25 dollars each, and the proceeds will go towards future school projects.

After the event, Osborn told the Chronicle that she was pleased with how it went.

"It went so well," she said. "The kids' hard work paid off with a delicious meal."
