The Franklin County Sheriff's Office has been busy helping stranded travelers since the arrival of the blizzard over the weekend.
Sheriff Aaron Dodd said they've received a total of 35 calls for help since the bad weather rolled in — vehicles off the roadway, vehicles in ditches, minor accidents and people stranded in their vehicles. He added that this does not include the many vehicles they have found in ditches.
"Lots of ice is built up on roadways so on top of getting vehicles out of the ditches that went in during white out conditions, we are now having trucks jackknife and slide off of the roads in icy conditions," he said. "South of Hampton on Highway 65, we were seeing a lot of redirected Interstate 35 truck traffic. With slick roadway surfaces they have been struggling to make it up hills. DOT has been spreading salt and it’s really been improving in the last hour."
Interstate-35 has been reopened, north and southbound.
Dodd reported that there have been no injuries due to weather-related accidents.
"We know of at least five people who spent the night in their vehicle and we hosted one person at the sheriff's office overnight," he said. "She is reunited with her vehicle and back on the road."
The Hampton Police Department has received several calls for motorist assistance due to the weather, according to Police Chief Mark Morrison.
