The gaming hour

It seems that lately we can't get away from daily reminders about how insane politics has become in this country and what the state authorities think they can get away with when it comes to regulating people's businesses and personal lives.

Looking at you, Texas and Florida.

But, as bad as things have gotten here, we at least still have a handful of checks and balances left that keep us mostly protected from authoritarians desperate to cling to power at all costs.

Reset and do it again

Last week attorneys representing smalltime developers of iOS apps announced a class-action settlement with Apple over App Store policies and practices.

The lawsuit is just one of a handful of cases against Apple and their aggressive control over app distribution on the iOS platform which, for reasons I'll never understand, continues to be utilized by millions of people. A substantial enough portion of the market that it approaches monopolistic control.

It should have been obvious

I am not a thin person. For the entirety of my adult life I have been in the range of what the grossly over-simplified body mass index considers "overweight." I've been okay with this for the most part. Sure, I'm not winning any fitness awards, but as long as I can climb a tree or carry a heavy object I've been comfortable where I am.

Age of the Geek: Animation explosion

E3 is happening as I write this column but, oddly enough, some of the biggest news of last week wasn't about video games. Instead, mostly thanks to Netflix's "Geeked Week," this has been a crazy week for announcements on new animated projects.

Most of those announcements are, appropriately enough, video game related at least but overall this has just been a big week for adult oriented cartoons.

So let's just run down some of what's coming up in the world of animation.

We could do more to build back better

The 2021 legislative session has adjourned for the year. Sine die. It’s an honor to represent North Iowa and I’m so grateful for your input and support.

The session ended with no comprehensive plan to help Iowans struggling from a global pandemic that has upended their lives and their pocketbooks.

Over the last 15 months, Iowa has seen:

More than 370,000 documented cases of COVID-19.

More than 6,000 Iowa deaths caused by the disease.

Tens of thousands of workers lose their jobs and struggle to make ends meet.

Iowa House Adjourns Sine Die

Week 18 of the 2021 calendar year brought a close to the legislative session. This week was long in hours but short on days as legislators worked late into the night to pass many priorities, including tax cuts, protecting law enforcement, protecting life, funding mental health, removing the “Cliff Effect” from the child care assistance program, as well as establishing a butchery innovation and revitalization fund for small meat processors.

Dear Todd Lettow, Superintendent and all Hampton School Board members,

Thank you for being strong leaders in out South Side Elementary SE area of Hampton. Thank you for working with the bus drivers to provide and ensure the safety of the students as passengers to obey all stop signs! The care of the children should always be first, and drivers held accountable for their actions. Bus drivers can be the person who children look up to. Their bus driver can be their hero for that entire school year. Bus drivers can teach the students to be respectful to others by their actions.

Hello, readers.

First of all, I want to wish each of you a Happy New Year, and thank you for reading the Chronicle. This year, more than ever, has shown the importance of community newspapers and our mission to bring you the latest in local news would not even begin to be possible without your support.

With that said, the last issue of 2020 also marks my last as editor for the Hampton Chronicle. I have taken a new position as a managing editor for a group of community-oriented newspapers in eastern Nebraska.

Me, a soldier?

Boy are we lucky. Dawn and I, and our volunteers have had some social contact (however distant) gathering donations for the Salvation Army. I suspect other poor souls in the community are intensifying addictions to video games and Facebook. Have you vaporized Ziggy from Planet Woojed? What's the cat up to? At least such interests divert us from graffiti missions, eh?

It's a busy galaxy

You spend one weekend playing a video game and all the news just drops on you.

While I was immersed in Night City a week ago, the pop culture world got hit with a double whammy between The 2020 Game Awards and the Disney Investor Day. Neither of these things sound like they would be the staging ground for major announcements, but the former has become a prime place for dropping new video game trailers and the latter gives us the first word on what is coming up for the media monolith.
