Franklin County getting ready to start vaccinations on next priority group

Franklin County Public heath is preparing to move on to the next phase of COVID-19 vaccinations as virus activity in the area continues to decline.

The county hasn't yet heard whether or not they will be receiving some of the initial launch of the newly approved Johnson & Johnson's vaccine. It is thought that the new vaccine will be distributed to counties ready to start vaccinating their next tier of priority, which would include factory workers and people with disabilities.

H-D and CAL meet for join session

The Hampton-Dumont School District held a joint meeting with the CAL School Board on Monday, February 15.

The joint session was relatively short, with Superintendent Todd Lettow updating both boards on happenings in the different buildings and explaining a recent change in the per-pupil funding split.

COVID-19 sees significant slowdown in Franklin County

COVID-19 activity in Franklin County has slowed to a crawl, making life a little easier on area healthcare providers as they work to distribute their week's allotments of vaccine.

In Franklin County, approximately 1,920 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to county residents, with 378 of them completing their series.

Reynolds backs away from centralized vaccine scheduling system

Governor Kim Reynolds explained the decision to not move forward with a centralized scheduling system for COVID-19 vaccines during last week's press conference.

Previously, the state had been looking at entering into a contract with Microsoft to create a statewide system for matching Iowans up with local vaccine providers. However, it was decided shortly after that the state would be backing away from that idea and leaving scheduling logistics to the individual counties.

Area providers start distributing COVID vaccine in Franklin County

COVID-19 vaccine rollout has started for the next priority population in Franklin County.

Now that most healthcare workers and long term care facility staff and residents have started or finished their vaccination, the focus is now on vaccinating child care workers and first responders along with seniors aged 65 and up.

According to Franklin County Public Health, 1,174 residents in Franklin County have started their vaccine series, with 227 of those receiving both doses. The county anticipates being allocated 200 doses per week through the rest of February.

H-D/CAL hosts speech contest

On Saturday, February 6, H-D/CAL Hosted the State Large Group Speech contest at the Hampton-Dumont Middle School.

Eight schools participated in the contest through a combination of in-person, virtual, and hybrid events. Of the 13 events performed by H-D/CAL's speech team, nine of them received straight ones, earning a total of ten 1 ratings and three 2 ratings over the course of the event.

Franklin County Convention Center Grand Re-Opening

The Franklin County Fair Board is proud to announce the Grand Re- Opening of the Convention Center with an Open House Gala on March 20th. This is a free event, and all are welcome to tour and enjoy light refreshments and an exciting drawing. The Open House Gala is taking the place of the annual Dinner Dance.

Co-op Merger Could Have Big Area Impact

Proximity and the ability to respond better to emerging challenges are being stressed as early talks proceed that might see the merger of two Iowa cooperatives with the potential for affecting farmers throughout much of Iowa as well as right here.

Farmers Win Cooperative is in talks with Five Star Cooperative for a merger that could unite the two cooperatives.

Talks have been ongoing with the boards of directors of both cooperatives inking a letter of intent to proceed with the merger.

As of Monday, COVID-19 vaccination eligibility now includes senior citizens, however there are lingering question about when and where one can get vaccinated.
