David Spurgeon

David Spurgeon, 72, of Hampton, passed away at home on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The family invites you to join them for a prayer service at 11 a.m. followed by an open house celebration of life until 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Harriman Park enclosed shelter on Highway 65 North in Hampton, Iowa. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sietsema-Atkinson Funeral Home in Hampton.

David was born on June 7, 1953, in Carthage, Missouri, to parents Raymond L. (Sr.) and Dorothy (Feather) Spurgeon. He was the youngest of 3 children, having been welcomed home by sister Charlotte and brother R.L.

David spent the first years of his life in Carthage, attending school there and causing a little mischief. He left Missouri as a late teen, heading west to California. While there, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and completed boot camp at Camp Pendelton, then served his country proudly in the second battalion platoon 2045 until 1972. His deep love of the USA endured throughout his life. He was a member of the American Legion and truly respected the stars and stripes of the American flag.

After discharge, he forged a new path to Hampton, Iowa to join his dad and brother. That’s where the course of his life was set, and it happened on the day he met Phyllis. The pair wiled away weekends at Beed’s Lake, cruised in the Roadrunner, and spent a lot of time jamming with friends. David played guitar and sang in the local and, “Count Spurmy and the Test Tubes.” Dad always said they were known for never finishing any of the songs they played.

He was a man of faith, baptized at First Christian Church in Hampton. He believed in God and Heaven and the power of grace.

David had his CDL and before retirement was a driver for Rausch Brothers trucking, Ionia.

From the time they were married on December 15, 1979, until they were parted by Phyllis’ passing in July of 2024, David and Phyllis lived a life of true love that set the strong foundation for their family. That family grew by one daughter every 4 years in the 1980’s as Missy, then Kimmy, then Tiffy arrived. David was the “fun” dad. He liked rock ‘n roll music, cannonballed into the pool, climbed the tallest trees, played a lot of frisbee, and generally was a big kid himself.

Even if we weren’t out doing something, Dad was still fun. The searing wit with which he delivered an unexpected one-liner cannot be duplicated, nor can his silly sense of humor. Sometimes it was something as simple as howling at the bathroom door while one of us girls was singing in the shower. As Dad was joking, Mom would shake her head (that is, when she wasn’t actually in on it) and act exasperated, but secretly she was laughing.

Being a dad and papa was the source of David’s greatest joy. He was devoted to all of his family, and the emphatic way he said, “I love you” - every single time - made you really feel it. He was immensely proud of each of his kids and grandkids, and that extended to each of his nieces and nephews as well. There was never a dad or papa or uncle who loved his family more than David loved his.

His legacy of love will be carried on by his kids: Melissa (Jason) Bahr, Decorah, Kimberly (Jim) Stanbrough, Aredale, Tiffany (Chris) Lamping, Mason City, grandkids: Hayley, Max (Madison Lindaman), Dominik, Sydney, Willow, and Killian, sister: Charlotte Buerge, sister-in-law: Gwen Spurgeon, and sister- and brother-in-law: Kathy and Tim Klenske, nieces: Teresa, Deana, Jennifer, and Sarah, and nephews: Zac, Luke Tyler, and Anton, his Muller family: Sonia, Sandy, Shane, and Sarah and kids, and all the treasured friends and honorary family who were lucky to have known him.

As David arrived in Heaven, our mom Phyllis was there to greet him along with his parents, brother R.L., parents-in-law Willis and Rose Towne, nephew Steven Buerge, and many beloved friends and family members.

Never let your fond memories of this great man fade. Watch for an eagle soaring in the sky. Dad says that will be him.
