Maren Subbert Places Fourth in State Championship Wrestling Meet

CORALVILLE - Hampton-Dumont-CAL junior placed fourth in the 190 pound class in the IGHSAU Class 1A State Championship wrestling Meet on Thursdai, Feb. 5 and Friday, Feb. 6. Subbert is proud of her accomplishment.

 

"I feel pretty good with a fourth place finish, as my main goal was at least to be on the podium," Subbert said. "I would always want to finish higher on the podium, but I'm satisfied with how I finished compared to last year. A lot of building will just be continuing to work and improve on what I need to as I head into my senior year."

Subbert won her first round match over Highland-Riverside's Chloe Sexton by ultimate tiebreaker (1-0) before falling in the quarterfinal. Subbert defeated SWAT's Megan Gerlock by fall at 5:29 in the consolation second round and Colfax-Mingo's Kennedy Phillips by fall at 7:20 in the consolation third round. Subbert defeated Central Lyon-George Little Rock's Kenley Korthals by decision (4-0) in the consolation semifinal before falling in the third place match to finish  fourth.

Sophomore Juliette Koch and junior Elsie Kuper both lost their first two matches to be eliminated from the tournament on Thursday. The second season in the history of the Hampton-Dumont-CAL girls program has officially come to an end.
