The streets of Downtown Hampton are once again adorned with hanging flower baskets, an annual summer tradition.

This will be the third year the Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce has overseen the project. And this year, the promotions committee — made up of Jerre Grefe, Rebeka Ault and Holly Narber — pulled it all together.

Friday morning, May 23, more than 20 baskets were hung up downtown by Franklin REC crew members. The baskets were created by the H-D-CAL FFA students.

During the May 22 city council meeting, Grefe said this year’s flower baskets may be the best they’ve ever had.

“Thank you to Kyle O’Brien and the H-D-CAL FFA,” she said. “The baskets are gorgeous. I think they are the best ones we’ve had.”

The flower baskets were sponsored by First Bank Hampton, but individual baskets can still be sponsored for 50 dollars. Grefe sponsored the basket in front of her shop, First and Second Vintage. The promotions committee is also looking for people to help water the flowers every day. If interested in sponsoring a basket or watering, call Center One at 641-456-5668 or Jerre Grefe at 515-851-0518.

“For the flowers to stay beautiful, they have to be watered every day,” Grefe said. “It takes a lot of volunteers to make this happen.”
