Season Set To Begin For Hampton-Dumont-CAL Girls Track And Field
The start of the track and field season is fast approaching for the Hampton-Dumont-CAL Bulldogs girls team as the team’s first meet is at the Girls A.D. Dickinson Relays at the UNI-Dome on March 11 at 2 p.m.
Head Coach Nicole Donnenwerth said that the Bulldogs were set to have their first practice of the year on March 4. Donnenwerth said that the team has big goals.
“Of course we have Charlee Morton coming back who looks to be a four year state qualifier in the throws,” Donnenwerth said. “She is also the reigning Drake Relays Champ in the discus and shot put and she is looking to three-peat in those. We’ve got Lily Hambly coming back and she was a great middle distance runner and sprinter and hurdler for us last year. We’ve got a big class of freshmen coming in that specialize in the sprints and we are excited to see what kind of relays we can put together. Maren Subber was a state qualifier as a freshman last year in the discus so we are excited to see how far she can go.”
During the first couple of meets which are indoor meets, Donnenwerth said it can be tricky due to limited events. But in the first meets, Donnenwerth said she is expecting to see the athletes get back into the swing of going against competition.
“We don’t put a lot of stock into times or distances in those indoor meets,” Donnenwerth said. “It gives them a chance to get out there and get back into that competitive spirit.”
As the season moves along, Donnenwerth said she wants to see the team have fun.
“We do some testing early on in the first week of practice and ultimately our goal is for that testing, the vertical, the standing broad jump, the 600-meter run, and the 100-meter run. We want every girl to just improve on those as the season ends. During all of that time in between we hope the girls are having fun and getting stronger.”
There are a few events that Donnenwerth said she thinks will be a strength for the Bulldogs.
“I think sprints are going to be really good for us,” Donnenwerth said. “I think we are going to have some middle distance and some sprint relays that we can piece together that we haven’t been to in recent years. The throws are going to be a strength for us. The field events are going to start the meets for us very strong as we have good long jumpers, high jumpers, and again the throwers. We are excited about the field events and sprints as well.”
