IOWA FALLS – It was cool and at times a little rainy, but the Bulldog girls and boys track teams took to the track for the first time since 2019 at Iowa Falls-Alden on Thursday, March 25.
No team scores were kept and the host school only had a pair of boys’ competitors due to COVID-19 quarantine, but that didn’t damper coach Dan Aalbers’ squad and the effort for the boys as well as coach Nikki Donnenwerth’s girls’ team.
“It was wonderful to be back on the track,” Aalbers said. “No team scores were kept, but it was a good night for the Bulldog boys.”
Among the highlights for the girls was a win for Lauren Meader in the high jump, going 4 feet, 8 inches. The Bulldogs made it a sweep in the event as Tate Schmitt won the boys’ portion of the event at 5-10. Both were good efforts for the first of the season and the weather conditions.
The boys’ 4x800 team of Zayden Erdman, Benji Sauke, Kale Folkerts and Jordan Severs also was in good form, clocking in at 8 minutes, 51.11 seconds, which is among the top-10 in the state in the early going.
The other winner for the girls was Teaghan Bird in the girls 400 hurdles, who also had three runner-up finishes.
Boys winners were plenty, including Tomas Cavazos in the 100, Glenn Miller in the 110 hurdles, Severs in the 1,600, the 4x100 relay of Max O’Dell, Logan Pfeffer, Tony Valenzuela and Cavazos; the 4x200 team of O’Dell, Valenzuela, Bryan Flores and Cavazos, the 4x400 team of Sauke, Flores, Folkerts and Valenzuela, the shuttle hurdle relay team of Schmitt, Pfeffer, Miller and Kaden Eilderts. Also, the distance medley relay team of Cal Heeren, Schmitt, Pfeffer and Mario De La Cruz won in 4:11.00.
Several other boys’ relays were among the top-10 in the state in the early season.
In fact, the only boys’ relay the Bulldogs didn’t claim was the sprint medley, in which they placed second.
The boys are back on the track this week at Roland-Story High School in Story City on Thursday, April 1.
