HAMPTON – A certainly scrappy Bulldog wrestling team went 3-1, losing only to Class 1A No. 10 Lake Mills in the final dual of the day to decide the team champion at the Hampton-Dumont wrestling invitational on Saturday, Jan. 9.

The dual came down to the second-to-last match to decide it with the visiting Bulldogs pulling out the 48-28 finale.

“Lake Mills is a tough team,” Bulldog head coach Patrick Hansen said. “It’s like that every time we wrestle. They are tough up and down the lineup. Just having a couple of kids injured, you know, it’s whatever. As long as we come out and we work hard and show improvement, that’s all I can ask for.”

The dual hinged on Class 2A ninth-ranked Carl Barkema’s 152-pound match against Brett Peterson. Try as he might to turn him, Barkema emerged with a 12-4 major decision.

“He knew what he was doing,” coach Hansen said of Peterson. “The kid is not a bad wrestler. He’s quite a bit over .500. Carl wrestles like he does. When you’ve got a ranking, either people come out gunning for you or they come out scared and they don’t want to wrestle you. That (the latter) is how that kid kind of took it.”

At the dual, the Bulldogs’ four seniors were honored, including Tomas Cavazos, Bryan Flores, Tristan Kurth and first-year wrestler Zach DeVries.

“I wish he would have been out a lot sooner,” coach Hansen said of DeVries. “I told him that. He never even told me he was going to come out. I went into (first) practice and he was there. I asked him, ‘why didn’t you do this six years ago when I was asking you to?’ He was like, ‘well, I’m here now.’ I was like, ‘well, happy for that.’

“Tomas was 4-0, Bryan was 3-1, only loss today was to Elijah Wagner, which is top-10 for Lake Mills; and Tristan was 2-2 with a couple forfeits.”

Besides that, Jakyb Kapp, who went 4-0, got a big win over 1A No. 9 Jack Ramaker, earning a 9-3 decision despite trailing 2-1 after the first period.

“That match was good for Jakyb Kapp,” coach Hansen said. “He has been ranked a lot, he made it to state last year. Tomas’ was pretty good, too, I don’t know what got into him. He just woke up.”

The Bulldogs earned their first three wins against Belmond-Klemme, 60-24; Collins-Maxwell (66-6) and the Southeast Polk JV (61-18) before the final. Jayson Stevens at 106, Jack Showalter at 113 and Barkema also went 4-0.

“We’re a feisty team,” coach Hansen said. “Coach (Kendrick) Suntken has been calling us the ‘Junkyard Dogs.’ It started down in Roland-Story, the Gilbert coach was pretty upset with us beating them and he’s like, ‘these kids are all junk!’ And, Kendrick said, ‘yeah, the Junkyard Dogs!’ And the kids just love that when we say it, bought into it.

“We may not look the best, we may not win the ones we’re supposed to win, but we come out and fight like a Junkyard Dog would.”
