Bulldogs dominate Clarion-Goldfield to claim first win

CLARION — The Bulldogs came out with a vengeance to earn their first victory of the season, a 33-0 thrashing of Clarion-Goldfield while on the road last Friday night.

Coach Andy Bruemmer also marked his first head coaching win as the Bulldogs showed it could run, pass and play some defense to shut out the Cowboys.

Touchdown runs by Tomas Cavazos, Malyk Schunk and Ozzy Johnstone were combined with a big 95-yard catch-and-run for Wyatt Sutter and another TD reception by Jaycob Martzahn to show some diversity on offense.

Sophomore Cal Heeren, in his third start at quarterback, was 7-of-12 passing for 140 yards, the two touchdowns and an interception.

The Bulldog (1-3) defense forced a pair of Cowboys’ turnovers with Abe Scheideman picking off CGD quarterback Shane Conlon and Mario De La Cruz, who led the Bulldogs in tackles, also recorded a fumble recovery.

Kale Folkerts and Logan Pfeffer also sacked Conlon, who was hurried into a 4-of-17 passing night and finished with negative-18 yards.

The win comes on the heels of homecoming and a tough opponent in Class 2A second-ranked Clear Lake.

The Lions have one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the state as Jaylen DeVries, a Southern Illinois University commit, has completed 61-of-87 passes for 982 yards and 12 touchdowns as opposed to one interception.
