Warhawks Girls Basketball Season Ends After Loss to Rebels
The West Fork girls basketball season has come to an end after a 57-48 loss to the Sioux Central Rebels on Friday, Feb. 20 in the second round of the Class 2A Region 1 Tournament. This comes after the Warhawks defeated the East Marshall Mustangs 48-17 in the first round on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
In the victory over the Mustangs, the Warhawks defense dominated, holding the Mustangs to just 17 points, including not allowing more than eight points in any quarter. Warhawks head coach Rodney Huber on his team's defensive performance in the game.
"Our zone defense has been really good this year," Huber said. "I thought we took away easy stuff, took away easy stuff; we took away the middle really well."
Sophomore Zada Huff led the Warhawks with 17 points on 7-of-25 shooting. Sophomore Josephine Schmidt led the Warhawks with 16 rebounds and sophomore Mya Marzen led the team with four assists. Senior Brylee Dickman scored 13 points and bulled down 13 rebounds. As the only senior on the team, Dickman spoke on the leadership of the team.
"Even though she hasn't been playing, Evie (Evelyn Hitzhusen) had had a big voice in our practices and on the bnech during games," Dickman said. "Zada is a good role model too. For being so young, it is insane how much she has stepped up."
In the loss to the Rebels, Huff led the Warhawks again with 21 points. Schmidt led the Warhawks with nine rebounds and Dickman led the team with five assists.
The Warhawks finish the season 11-12 on the season and 6-8 in conference play. With the Warhakws returning most of their players next season, they will look to improve and make it further in the playoffs.
