Warhawk Baseball Continues Winning Streak

The West Fork baseball team won both games they played last week and has extended their winning streak to four games. The offense has been the main reason for the hot streak as the Warhawks have scored double digit runs in all four of those games. The Warhawks were supposed to play in five games over the week, but three of the games were either canceled or suspended due to rain. The Warhawks defeated the Nashua-Plainfield Huskies 11-1 on Thursday, June 19 and the Northwood-Kensett Vikings 11-4 on Friday, June 20.
Thursday’s game versus Nashua-Plainfield was a make up game from Monday’s rainout. The game ended after six innings due to the mercy rule. The Warhawks fell down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning before scoring 11 unanswered runs. The Warhawks scored one run in the top of the second inning, two runs in the top of the third inning, one run in the top of the fifth inning and seven runs in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore Zander Hansen has a big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two singles and two RBIs. Hansen would also be the starting pitcher for the Warhawks and he would pick up his second win of the season. He tossed six innings and only gave up one run on one hit and four walks, while striking out an impressive 10 Huskies’ batters.
On Friday the Warhawks offense picked up right where they left off from Thursday. The Warhawks scored two runs in the top of the first inning and the top of the fourth inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Northwood-Kensett responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead in half before West Fork scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to break the game open. The Vikings added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, while the Warhawks added a run in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore Brett Behr had a productive day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two singles, a double and three RBIs. Senior Ashyr Wiseman was the starting pitcher for the Warhawks and he picked up his third win of the season, tossing four innings and allowing two runs on one hit and four walks while striking out eight Vikings’ batters.
Head coach of the Warhawks, Kayden Ames, gave his offense a lot of the credit for the current four-game winning streak.
“The biggest thing in the last four games has been putting balls in play when we have runners on,” said Ames. “We’re starting to look comfortable at the plate and we have been really good about building on positives and not letting negatives tear us down.”
The two wins on the week pushes the Warhawks record on the season to 8-6 and 5-4 in conference play. The Warhawks will play six games during this week, having hosted Neman-Catholic for a doubleheader on Monday, June 23 and having played Hampton-Dumont-CAL on the road on Tuesday, June 24. They play Central Springs on the road on Wednesday, June 25 at 7:30 p.m.
