Ronald Hanson

Ronald Hanson, 89, of Coralville, Iowa, passed away on June 1, 2025 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

Ron was born on March 16, 1936 in Mason City, Iowa to Alvin and Elvina (Peterson) Hanson.  After graduating from Mason City High School, Ron received an Associates of Art degree from North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City before attending two years at Iowa Tech and IBM Schools.  Ron worked for more than 32 years as a computer analyst. 

In early 1955, Ron met Sharon Henson (Yes, Henson met Hanson) at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake.  On December 26, 1955, the couple married at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason City and to this union, four children were born.

The family moved to Hampton and raised their four children. The Hansons were active in St. Paul Lutheran church, school activities, community, and sporting events at all levels. Ron and Sharon were also active in their childrens’ sports activities as fans and boosters.

He continued his sports passion following his grandkids through Little League, middle school, high school, and college.

In 1985, Ron and Sharon moved to Coralville and Sharon and Ron became active members of Lutheran Campus Ministry and Zion Lutheran Church.  He was involved with Thrivent and was one of the 2005 National Retired Volunteers of the Year. Ron was an avid Hawkeye fan, having only missed two home basketball games and two football games since 1985.

Ron is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; children: Elizabeth Austin (Dana), Jeffrey Hanson, Jennifer Mertuka (Gene) and Paul (Yumi Ahn); grandkids: Megan, Jordan (Tague), Kristin (Kyle), Julian, Nicolas, and Isabel; and Ron’s sister, Beverly Long.  He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers LeRoy and Burnell Geving, and sisters June and June Geving, as well as his sisters-in-law, Donna and Yvonne Geving, and brother-in-law Ray Long.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City.  A light lunch and time to greet the family will follow.  Private interment will be held at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
