Merle George Strahorn, 84

Merle George Strahorn, 84, formerly of Hampton, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2023, at the Pinnacle Specialty Care in Cedar Falls. Woodley Funeral Home of Hampton is caring for Merle and his family.

 

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. with an hour-prior visitation until service time on Friday, October 20, 2023, at Hampton United Methodist Church with Pastor Dennis Burns officiating. Burial will follow at Hazel Green Cemetery in Ackley.

 

Merle was born on May 7, 1939, in Hampton to Merle Woodrow and Elizabeth Sanders (Kaster) Strahorn. He graduated from Hampton-Dumont High School and became a life-long resident of Hampton. His father owned “Merle’s T.V.” in Hampton which he took over and worked as a T.V. repairman for over 30 years.

 

Merle was a Freemason and very involved in the Shriners. He helped raise money for the Shriners Hospital’s. Merle was an avid bowler and had bowled several 300 games. In his younger years, he golfed a lot at the country club. He enjoyed taking photos and taught photography at NIACC in Mason City, as well as photographed many weddings. In his free time, he liked doing puzzles and once put together a 12,000-piece puzzle. He had a joy for racing cars; and drove a Porsche while racing. He loved cars; especially imported cars and owned about 6 Saabs over his lifetime. Merle did a lot of traveling; he traveled all over Europe and took a cruise on the Queen Mary 2.

 

Those left to cherish his memory include his sister, Gloria Pohlmann of Cedar Falls, nieces Jeanette Francis and Lenette Tange and nephews Michael (Sandra) Roberts and Nathan (Crystal) Roberts and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and best-friend Steve Robinson.
