Jon Schmitt Celebrates Retirement with Community

Jon Schmitt of Sheffield said farewell to his car shop, Jon’s Auto Truck and Repair, on Saturday morning, Feb. 28, with a special open house.
Jon, who took over the shop in July of 1999, told the Chronicle that he was tired and ready to retire, but that he was thankful for all the support he had received from his customers throughout the years.
Last year marked 50 years since he had worked as a mechanic in the building, first working for Sheahan Chevrolet. Ever since taking over, he had become a staple for those in need of car services in the community, offering everything from oil changes to engine work.
Just last summer, Jon was named the recipient of Sheffield’s 2025 People in the Park CC Gilman Award. While he said he appreciated the honor, he doesn't need awards or recognition.
“My award is the customers,” he told the Chronicle last summer. “It’s all about keeping the customers happy.”
Jon's shop was recently purchased by Hampton native Matt Hayner, who plans on offering full-service car repairs, including engine and transmission work, with a three-year, 36,000-mile warranty.
"I want everyone to give Matt a shot!" said Jon.
Matt said he is looking forward to serving the community and being involved.
He plans on opening the doors of Matt's Auto Care on Monday, March 9.
The car shop, located at 202 E. Gilman St in Sheffield, can be reached at 641-892-4260.
