Jeryl W. Schmitt

Jeryl W. Schmitt, 67, of Hampton, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, after a battle with Melanoma cancer that lasted less than a year.  He was born October 11, 1952, in Hampton, to Wendell and Dorothy (Rodemeyer) Schmitt.

Jeryl graduated from Hampton High School.  He furthered his education at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University.  Jeryl was united in marriage to Jane Kay Smith on April 20, 1985, in Ankeny. He was a machinist at Mid:Com Midwest Meter in Hampton, retiring after over 40 years.  Jeryl was also a lifelong farmer and was a member of Pheasants Forever and Iowa State University Alumni Association.  He was affiliated with First Christian Church in Hampton and was a member of the First Christian Church Men’s Fellowship. Jeryl was an avid Cyclones fan and loved watching ISU sports.  He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and traveling with his wife, Jane.  He liked playing cards and Cribbage, and enjoyed attending his son's music performances through the years.  Time spent with friends, his family, and grandchildren was precious to Jeryl.

Jeryl is survived by his wife Jane Schmitt of Hampton; son Jeff (Lori) Schmitt of Iowa Falls; grandchildren Tara, Luke and Emma Schmitt of Iowa Falls; father Wendell Schmitt of Hampton; brother David (Connie) Schmitt of Ankeny; sister Mary Lynne Schmitt of Fairmont, Minnesota; along with several other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Schmitt.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family or the Melanoma Research Foundation.

  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, private family services will be held.  Jeryl’s family is inviting friends to join his funeral service virtually via “Zoom” at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 20, 2020.  To join the "meeting" enter the following:
