Edward James ‘Jim’ Hanson

Jim Hanson, 92, formerly of Dumont, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2024, at Franklin Country View Care Center in Hampton. Memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 15, at New Hope United Methodist Church, Dumont, with Pastor Dennis Burns presiding. There will be no burial at this time. Visitation will be at the church 2 hours prior to the service.

Edward James ‘Jim’ Hanson was born May 8, 1931, in Iowa City, the son of Emma Berkley. He was raised by his aunt and uncle Lydia and Bill Richtsmeier, and his cousins Harold, Rosella and Lillian were as his siblings. He graduated from Hansell Consolidated School in 1950. He worked a few jobs until receiving a letter from his Uncle Sam and worked for him for 2 years in Kentucky and Europe. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Jim worked in plumbing and heating.

On August 28, 1954, Jim was united in marriage with Lora Jane Faber at Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church in Dumont (now New Hope United Methodist Church). They were blessed with 2 children and Jim started farming with his cousin. He purchased his own farm in 1968 and was active in farming until the 1980’s. He then began to drive truck over the road then delivered new Winnebago motorhomes around the country with his wife Lora Jane until retirement. Jim and Lora Jane would make monthly trips to Chicago to a big flea market with their friends Jim and Phyllis. They always came back with many treasures, including more pocket knives for Jim's massive collection. After 68 years of marriage Lora Jane passed away in 2022.

Jim will be missed by his daughter: Linda (Mike) Buchanan, Hampton; daughter-in-law: Kim Hanson, Dumont; grandchildren: Zac (Amanda) Hanson, Iowa Falls; Levi (Amy) Hanson, Waterloo; Lucas Hanson, Seattle, Washington; Jessica Buchanan, Minneapolis; Rebecca Buchanan, Denver, Colorado; great grandchildren: Brinlee, Makinlee and Oaklee Hanson, Emmaus, Briar and Ira Hanson; sister-in-law Ardith Hill, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Paul and Karin Faber, and several nieces, nephews and their families.

Jim was preceded in death by his mother Emma Berkley, aunt and uncle Lydia and Bill Richtsmeier; wife Lora Jane Hanson and son Mike Hanson.
