Arlene Maifeld

Arlene Maifeld, 87, of Hampton, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Franklin Country View in Hampton. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Zion Reformed Church in rural Sheffield. Visitation will be on Friday, August 14, 2026, from 4-6 p.m. at the Sietsema-Atkinson Funeral Home in Hampton. A private burial will take place in the Hampton Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sietsema-Atkinson Funeral Home in Hampton. 

Arlene Mae (Schaap) Maifeld was born on November 8, 1938, in Austinville, Iowa, to Peter and Margery (Harken) Schaap. At the age of three, she moved with her family to Aplington, where she was raised and graduated from Aplington High School in 1956. She continued her education at Dordt College, graduating in 1958 with a Teacher’s Certificate.

On October 14, 1958, Arlene was united in marriage to her high school classmate, Dale Maifeld. Together they were blessed with three children: Kemalyn, Kristel, and Mitchell.

Arlene worked at R.M. Harrison/Hampton Wholesale and was business manager for The Carpenters before serving in the Franklin County Recorder’s Office for 16 years, including 12 years as the elected Franklin County Recorder.

Arlene enjoyed reading, needlepoint, cross-stitching, teaching her daughters to sew, and assembling jigsaw puzzles. On many weekends with good weather, Arlene and Dale enjoyed taking their camper and children to a local campground, often meeting Dale’s brother Ron and wife Judy. Arlene was a faithful member of Zion Reformed Church in Sheffield, where she was active in Vesper Circle and Women of Zion. Her accounting skills benefited many organizations including Zion’s Sunday School until only months ago. She was also involved with the TLC Mothers Club, the Franklin General Hospital Auxiliary, and even in the last days of her life started reading the current Hampton Library Book Club book.

Arlene is survived by her children, Kemalyn (Ed) Green, Kristel (Dennis) Curoe, and Mitchell (Amy) Maifeld; grandchildren, James (Carly) Green, Emily Scharf (Anthony Robb), Brad Curoe (Sheryl Patricelli), Joel Curoe, Ted Curoe, and Wilson Maifeld; great-grandchildren, Gracelyn, Eliana, William, and Benjamin Green, Emery and Camille Robb, and Hudson Scharf; brother-in-law, Ronald (Judy) Maifeld; sisters-in-law, Margery Freese and Janice (Patrick) O’Donnell; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Margery (Harken) Schaap; her husband, Dale; sisters, Norma Johnson and Carol Schaap; brothers, Arnold Schaap and Edgar Schaap; sisters-in-law, Alberta Schaap, Rose Schaap, Doris Schaap, and Mary Ann Schaap; and brothers-in-law, Alvin Johnson and Herman Freese.
