Alberta Mae (Van Dyke) Speedy Opperman

Alberta Mae (Van Dyke) Speedy Opperman passed away Thursday, April 23, 2026, at The Rehabilitation Center of Allison. She was born August 15, 1932, in Washington Township, Butler County, Iowa, in a farmhouse near the Washington Reformed Church to Jake and Emma (Reints) Van Dyke. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am, Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at the Allison Congregational Church. Burial will be at the Allison Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 pm, Monday at the Church. Woodley Funeral Home of Allison is caring for Alberta and her family. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial to her family to be used in her honor.

Alberta graduated from Hansell Community School in 1951. She was on the Hansell basketball team that won State Championship in 1951. Alberta was inducted into the Iowa Girls Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975.

She married Clair Speedy at the little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. From this union two children were born, Todd and Clark. Clair passed away in 1977. In 1989 Alberta married Herschel Opperman. Herschel passed away in 1994.

Alberta worked for the Allison-Bristow school as Board Secretary, then she worked at the Butler County Courthouse, eventually becoming Auditor. She was an EMT for the Allison Ambulance, on the Allison Fire Department, worked at Casey’s and worked in the Courthouse, all at the same time. She retired in 2000 from the Butler County Auditor position.

She was a longtime member of the Allison Congregational Church. She enjoyed spending time with family, friends and golfing.

Alberta is survived by son Todd (Donna) Speedy, Hampton; step-son John (Julianne) Opperman, Portland, ME; daughter-in-law Marcia (Steve) Stark, Allison; granddaughters Kimberly (Andrew Jeske), Brianna (Cody) Klunder, Marisa (Brett) Stirling, step-grandchildren: Jilissa (Kunz) Schulz, Tim (Niki) Kunz, Seth Kunz; great grandchildren: Dusti Rose and Lane Forest Klunder, Austen Ann and Brody Clark Stirling, Bennett Andrew and Rylee Jo Ann Jeske; other step grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, husbands Clair Speedy and Herschel Opperman, special friend Duane Wubbena, son Clark Speedy, brother Chris Van Dyke and step-daughters Pamela Clark and Patricia Yencer.
