The Hampton Church of Christ building is one of nine structures to be included in the 2017 Most Endangered Properties List. The list, compiled by Iowa Preservation, comes out once every year and features structures that are in need of attention from community members, architects, benefactors, etc., who have an interest in preserving the included structures cultural significance.
The structure, built in 1916, is representative of the Neo Classical Revival Style, resembling more of a classical courthouse or municipal design, than of a church. After a fire broke out, burning down the structure that the congregation used, in 1893, construction was commissioned on the building.
On Nov. 11, 1916, another fire burned most of the construction work done on the new church, requiring an entire rebuild. The morning after the fire, the congregation raised $30,000 to continue with the construction of the building now on 22 1st St NE, Hampton. In September of 1917, the congregation gathered in the fully completed church.
