Harvesting a healthy relationship

Letter to the Editor:

On Wednesday, Aug. 26, Franklin County Healthy Harvest sponsored a Progressive supper in downtown Hampton. We had three Restaurants participate in the event. Franklin County Healthy Harvest would like to thank Willie's Sports Bar & Grill, La Frontera Mexician Restaurant and the Rustic Brew for being incredible hosts and providing us with wonderful foods.
Each location had unique features and we got to tour and understand what they are trying to do for the community. They prepared the foods from local growers within the Franklin County region. Franklin County Healthy Harvest is an organization that is trying to match local growers of foods with facilities like local restaurants.
We as Franklin County Healthy Harvest would like to see more foods grown locally on menus that are easily accessible to customers. Also with this pairing, the local economy can be supported within our county. For the average American meal, the food used to make it travels 1,500 miles before it reaches our plates. One might ask how fresh is it? We also are trying to give small farmers of vegetables, fruit, meats and grains a way to sell without all the travel expense and provide a much fresher source.
The Progressive meal could have not happened without the people that attended the meal. They had the opportunity to learn about what our local restaurants can provide for them and how hard they work to make it happen. And again, the money stayed within the community.
Hats off to everyone that made it a fun night. Looking forward to next year.
