Traffic light replacement project shelved until spring

A change to a state-funded grant has delayed a project that will eventually replace the county’s only functioning set of traffic lights.
     According to Hampton Public Works Director Doug Tarr, lights at the intersection of Highways 3 and 65 will now get replaced next spring. The city received a $175,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation to complete the project this year, but the original document needed a few modifications before Hampton could proceed.
     If changes weren’t made, the city would have been forced to split the grant money for new lights at two intersections, which didn’t sit well with what local officials wanted.
