New to the restaurant district in Hampton is La Amiguita, serving up Mexican cuisine, highlighted by the signature fresh tortillas, chips and salsa, of Tortilleria R US.
Owner Neal Johnson, also owner of Tortillieria R US, opened the restaurant this year, looking to provide a place to expand beyond his operation of serving fresh tortillas, chips and produce to the Hampton community, to more Mexican cuisine.
Previously, Tortilleria R US opened in April of 2015, inspired by fresh tortilla restaurants in Florida. Johnson and his wife Roxxann were eventually approached by customers about expanding food service beyond tortillas, and they obliged, creating a sit down Tortilleria. In December 2015, they expanded their operation to include a second bathroom. They had a complete sit-down operation by January 2016.
Noticing the failure of two neighboring Mexican restaurants, Johnson decided to take a chance on operating a restaurant in their absence. In September 2016, Johnson purchased his neighboring property for La Amiguita.
