St. Paul’s Lutheran School was abuzz last week as Bruce Harris gave students a peek inside his bee operation.
Harris explained how bees collect honey, their characteristics, the equipment he uses and a few stories from the fray. Students got a close look at some tools, like the smoker Harris uses to calm the bees down and the boxes where he collects the honey.
Tammy Morris, instructor at St. Paul’s, said the idea to bring in a beekeeper was to supplement lessons about climate change and the decline in some animal populations taught to the sixth, seventh and eighth graders. She said this shows on a more local and practical scale what can be done to address some of those issues.
“You don’t have to try to solve every problem, but this shows something we could do to make a difference in our community,” she said. “That gives a sense of empowerment.”
She added that while climate change can be a controversial issue, it’s good to get students thinking about conservation regardless of their stance on the topic.
