St. Patrick’s director of Hispanic choir to retire

Twenty years ago, Carolina Gaytan found solace from a tough time in her life in the choir at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton.
Gaytan came to Hampton from Weslaco, Texas in May of 1997 to be with her oldest son, who was struggling with the after-effects of a divorce. He passed away just 10 months later, but Gaytan decided to stay in Hampton, as the community was small, but supportive and welcoming.
She first got involved with the choir at St. Patrick’s because of her family’s bond with music. Her family had a choir in Texas that she sang in regularly and her desire for music was still very apparent.
“I still had that in me,” she said.
