Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey visited Franklin County on July 8 and met with members of the Franklin County Historical Society and toured the Franklin County museum and the historic REA plant just south of Hampton.
Northey’s stop was part of his tour around central Iowa counties. He first met with members of the Franklin County Historical Society and learned about a lot of artifacts in the museum at the fairgrounds.
He then toured the REA plant, which was built in 1937 and was the first power plant in operation west of the Mississippi River.
“Seeing this power plant gives me real appreciation for how electricity was first made available to farm families,” Northey said.
