RSVP program connects H-D students, seniors through reading

A new series of reading and writing programs coming to Hampton-Dumont schools will connect young learners with older members of the community.
The first project of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), a buddy reading program for elementary students, is set to begin as early as this month.
RSVP includes the buddy reading program, as well as reading coaches for middle school and a pen-pal project for fourth and fifth graders. Volunteers over the age of 55 will lead all three programs.
With the reading buddy program, which is expected to start later this month at South Side Elementary, volunteers will read with students for at least an hour a week. Theresa Price, RSVP Volunteer Coordinator, said this provides support for students, as well a venue for older, possibly re-tired residents to connect with younger members of the community.
“This helps get some of our older citizens to stay involved in the community, stay active, give back and keep themselves busy,” she said. “It’s helping teachers, students and seniors.”
Elementary Principal Ellen Pickhinke said the reading program will help students become better readers, but more importantly, it will pro-vide another personal connec-tion for both the students and volunteers.
