Report: ICE detainer requests ignored in Franklin County

Local law enforcement officials say details in a report identifying Franklin County as one of 22 Iowa counties no longer honoring a federal agency’s requests to detain suspected undocumented immigrants for 48 hours after they've been arrested should be taken with a grain of salt.

 

Simply put, Franklin County has no place to detain anyone for 48 hours.

 

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Iowa issued the report last week that named counties no longer complying with "detainer requests" from Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The agency sometimes flags a person after they've been arrested and jailed if he or she is suspected of not having proper documentation to be in the country.
