Reply to Stoetzer’s editorial

Letter to the Editor: To the editor:
This is a response to Ethan Stoetzer’s editorial “There are some things I can’t defend” (Aug, 16, 2017) and Jack Healy’s New York Times (NYT) article “Stay, Hide or Leave.”
I thought that Mr. Stoetzer wrote a very compelling editorial, and I agree with him that Healy had his own agenda, writing that NYT article.
I was one of the Franklin County residents that Healy interviewed, and was quoted in his article. I was quoted as saying — if the sheriff reported undocumented immigrants who landed in his custody to the federal authorities, “it could make our country safer.” What he did not print were the other things I said.
I told him illegal immigrants who commit crimes, i.e. serious crimes, that they should be the ones deported. Undocumented immigrants who are living peacefully, working and raising their families — find a way to let them stay. Don’t tear families apart. On a go forward basis, maybe the United State can find an easier way to let immigrants come to the U.S. legally, be able to work and eventually, get their citizenship — to live the “American Dream.”
So, as Healy did with Sheriff Larson, he did with me. Mr. Healy picked and chose what he wanted to quote and report.
Hampton is a small town of 4,400 people who are trying to live peacefully, make a living, raise their families, retire and enjoy life. As Mr. Stoetzer said in his editorial: we can’t advocate the ambulance chasing done by some reporter when there is no ambulance.
