Principal Spider-Man: Buseman owns up to bet after elementary students read 1 million minutes

A web-slinging, crime-fighting superhero took control of South Side Elementary on May 27 to protect students and faculty members from villians lurking about the Hampton-Dumont community.

     Well, sort of.

     Principal Jerry Buseman dressed up as Spider-Man last week to fulfill his portion of a bet he made with H-D elementary students this spring. Buseman promised to wear a superhero costume for an entire school day if the collective K-3 student body read 1 million minutes during a three-month timeframe.

     The students delivered, and Buseman had no choice but to follow through with his promise.

     “A lot of them were real unsure as they came in. It was kind of quiet – I got a lot of stares,” a costume-clad Buseman said as he sat in his office. “I think a lot of the kids were unsure if it was really me or somebody else.”
