A potentially big development for the area economy is in the works.
The North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation (NICEDC) recently announced they are in the later stages of facilitating the construction of a pork processing facility south of Mason City. On Monday, officials confirmed that North Carolina-based Prestage Farms intends to build the multi-million dollar plant by 2018.
If all goes as planned, a $240 million, 600 sq ft. facility will be built between 43rd Street and the Avenue of the Saints. The facility will perform the entire pork processing process, starting with the live animal and ending by shipping directly to the grocery store.
Such a facility is estimated to add between 900 and 1,000 full-time jobs to the area, along with 1,200 construction jobs during the two-year building process.
