Pool issues highlight Hampton council workshop

Concerns over wage rates and staffing shortages at the Hampton Aquatic Center topped a lengthy discussion at Monday night’s city council workshop.
     Pool director Bradley Waddle met with the group for his annual preseason update. He explained that the staff currently lacks Red Cross-certified lifeguards to teach swimming lessons, which could cause problems this summer. Only one certified lifeguard is returning in 2015, Waddle said.
     Waddle felt the cost of the Red Cross certification course compared to lifeguards’ wages might hinder individuals from earning accreditation. He and City Manager Ron Dunt will continue investigating other certification options before the swimming season arrives.
