Two Franklin County farmers earned statewide recognition during the 96th annual Iowa Farm Bureau meeting in Des Moines on Dec. 3.

Val Plagge, Latimer, and Jay Van Wert, Sr., Hampton, were honored for their commitment to agriculture during a special awards ceremony held during the event. Plagge took home the 2014 Iowa Farm Bureau Bob Joslin Excellence in Agriculture Award, while Van Wert received this year’s Iowa Farm Bureau Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award.

Both Plagge and Van Wert are active on the local agriculture scene and have served on numerous county farm boards and other committees. Plagge and her husband, Ian, grow corn and soybeans near Latimer and also raise hogs. She serves as the public relations chair of the Franklin County Farm Bureau and is a member of Iowa Farm Bureau’s Speaker Corps program.
