ACKLEY – No Mandy Willems? No problem.
In Class 1A No. 7 AGWSR girls’ basketball team’s first full game without the senior guard, the Cougars routed Belmond-Klemme 75-25 to prove that the Cougars are not a one-woman show.
She’d sprained her ankle against BCLUW on Tuesday, Jan. 23 and was a game-day decision for a big showdown the next night to decide the NICL West crown at Grundy Center.
“We went in shock,” AGWSR coach Laurie Gann said of the initial injury. “They haul her off, put her in a back room and no one knows what’s wrong with her until halftime. Then we don’t know how bad it is. We started pulling together better by the fourth quarter. I think a little bit of it was, ‘who steps up and leads?’"...
