Winter weather and other emergency alerts for Hampton residents are just one text away.
Doug Tarr, public works director, said the late-December snowstorm is a perfect reminder to sign up for Nixle, the service the city uses to send out notices of the snow ordinance, road closures in town and other notices that need to be distributed immediately.
“With this technology, you can be informed of what’s happening on short notice, especially for emergency events,” he said.
Anyone with text messaging can sign up for Nixle and can do so two ways. The first is to text Hampton’s zip code, 50441, to 888-777. The se-cond is to go to www.nixle.com and enter a phone number and local ad-dress where alerts should be sent.
Tarr said Nixle is an invaluable tool for the city, as it helps disseminate information quickly and alert citizens of the issuance of the city’s snow ordinance almost im-mediately. With the unpredictability of Iowa weather, Tarr said it’s important to be able to issue the ordinance and suitable notice in just a matter of minutes.
