Ambitious Hampton businesses have a shot at winning $8,000 thanks to a new competition launched by Main Street Iowa.
The contest, called Open 4 Business, is designed to help Main Street Iowa programs provide additional support and resources for their downtown districts. Open 4 Business allows Main Street shops, restaurants and other companies to develop a plan detailing how they would utilize $8,000 to improve their businesses. The best plan will move on to the regional event and a shot at the $8,000 top prize.
The contest mirrors ABC’s hit show “Shark Tank,” where business owners pitch their plan in front of a panel of investors who then pick the most viable proposal.
“It’s about economics – what can local businesses do to bring more dollars downtown,” explained Newton Grotzinger, Hampton Main Street director. “Maybe it’s bringing a new product to generate more dollars or maybe it’s expanding their business. $8,000 doesn’t go a long ways, but it has a chance to have an impact.”
