Dr. Craig Semler saw something in the Hampton community that showed it’d be a viable place to practice optometry.
“I was a small town guy,” he said. “That was part of the attraction.”
Semler began his practice in Hampton in 1975, moving from a group practice in Mason City. Nearly 44 years later, Semler announced his retirement.
Semler can trace his passion for optometry back to his family. His father was a physician, his uncle an eye doctor, his sister a nurse and a brother and brother-in-law were both MDs.
“I grew up in a medical family,” he said, adding that optometry, specifically, fascinated him. “The optics and math part of optometry was part of that attraction.”
