Local man crashes car after driving intoxicated, flees to his home

The District 9 Iowa State Patrol responded to a one-vehicle accident Tuesday night, and discovered the driver had fled the scene. ISP authorities later found the man at his home, which the vehicle was registered to.
According to a crash report by the ISP, Robby J. Koppen, 37, of Sheffield was traveling northbound on N 3rd St in Sheffield shortly after 9 p.m. when he lost control of his 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV for unknown reasons. Koppen crossed the centerline, veered off the road and crashed head-on with a utility pole.
The collision caused disabling damage to the SUV totaling $10,000, and $2,000 in damage to the pole.
