Support seniors’ ‘home away from home’

Letter to the Editor:

I have been hearing on the radio recently about all of the fun and interesting things going on in our city and county such as the Relay for Life activities, basketball contests, Father-Daughter Dance, etc. There is a great deal of volunteer work done to make them successful.
A young woman named Heather Holm had her head shaved and earned over $2,500 for the American Cancer Society in order to help friends who have suffered with that disease. She and DJ husband Mike team up to promote fun things for everyone and help different organizations. I wish that I were still able to kick up my heels, but since I can’t do that, listening will be fun, too.
Right now they are working hard on their latest project, a Mardi Gras-style event called “A Night to Remember.” The event will be held at the Franklin County Convention Center on Saturday, April 30, from 6-12 p.m. All types of music from high school singers, Dan’s One Man Band, to a DJ with tunes from all eras will be filling the evening. Another big plus is food and beverages for snacking, which everyone likes. A raffle of several different items of great value will take place as well.
It will be just like a trip to the Big Easy, but much less expensive. Tickets for Senior Center members are $5 and $10 for the. The Barkema Foundation will match all funds up to $8,000 earned, so it will be a big fundraiser for the Hampton Senior Center.
Be reminded that there are many, many people in our community who use the Senior Center, which is their home away from home. Many of them are probably your parents and grandparents, so I hope that you all come and have fun.
