Letter to the Editor

Stop sucking down those cigs

Letter to the Editor:

Do you have a person at home that smokes? Do you smoke? Well let me tell you something, over 430,000 people die from smoking each year. Do you want to quit smoking?
One reason you shouldn’t smoke is that it hurts you. It’s basically suicide. When you smoke there is tar in the smoke. So, when the smoke enters your lungs, the tar goes in too. However, there’s one difference between the smoke and the tar: the smoke comes out of your lungs, but the tar does not. It sinks to the bottom of your lungs and will keep building up. It will clog your system and soon you won’t be able to breathe.
Another reason it hurts you is that it might cause lung cancer. About 158,000 people die of lung cancer each year, and about 30 percent of them are people who smoke.
Another reason you shouldn’t smoke is because it hurts the people around you. Thousands of second-hand smokers die each year. For example, let’s say that you live with your daughter and you smoke. You’re not the only one who breathes in the smoke and the tar. She does, too. If something happens to her because you were smoking, it’s your fault.
A third reason you should stop smoking is you will save hundreds of dollars by not paying for cigarettes. If you pay an average of $18 a day for cigarettes, you could save up to $7,000 year if you quit smoking.
Another reason you shouldn’t smoke is because it makes you smell funny. Even if you take a shower, the stench might be soaked into your clothes, car or even your whole house. That’s why some people have a sour looking face around you.
I hope this letter has convinced you to stop smoking. If you’re wondering how to quit, you should talk to your doctor. They’ll prescribe you something. Most of all, talk to your family about support to help you quit. I think they’ll be willing to help.
