Local residents turned out in force and packed the Franklin County Historical Society Museum on May 6 to dedicate the highly anticipated Admiral William D. Leahy Memorial. Guest speakers, music and an open house greeted visitors at the ceremony for the new exhibit, which features artifacts from the life and career of Hampton's most prestigious native son.

"If the town of Denison, Iowa can be proud of being the birthplace of the actress who starred with Jimmy Stewart in 'It's a Wonderful Life,' then Hampton should takes its place with pride amongst the communities of Iowa for being the birthplace of Admiral Leahy," said Steve Deike, chair of the Leahy Memorial Committee.

Leahy, who was born in Hampton in 1875, held many high-ranking positions in the military and government during his lifetime.
