Larson, Eberling score primary election victories

    Franklin County Republicans picked Linn Larson and Corey Eberling to represent the party in November during Tuesday’s primary election.
    Larson defeated Rick Rieken 634-559 to land the sheriff’s nomination, while Eberling, the incumbent, defeated David Schoning 231-206 for the Supervisor District 3 nod. Larson will move on to face Democrat Ed Hanig in the general election. No Democrats filed in Supervisor District 3.
    Incumbent county Auditor Michelle Giddings also won the Republican nomination for her office. She was unnopposed.
    The sheriff and supervisor races were the only contested races on the local ballot. Other action was focused at the state and federal levels.
    • Iowa House District 54: Incumbent Rep. Linda Upmeyer, R-Clear Lake, won the Republican Party’s nomination and was unopposed. No Democrats filed.
    • U.S. House District 4: Incumbent Rep. Steve King, R-Kiron, defeated state Sen. Rick Bertrand, R-Sioux City, for the Republican Party’s nomination. Kim Weaver, of Sheldon, won the Democratic nomination and was unopposed.
    • U.S. Senate: Incumbent Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, won the Republican nomination and was unopposed. Patty Judge outlasted three competitors for the Democratic nomination.

    Democratic sheriff candidate Ed Hanig announced Wednesday he will withdraw his name from the November ballot. Hanig ran uncontested in the June 7 Democratic primary and won the party's nomination for sheriff.
    Hanig, who serves as Sheffield's police chief, submitted his retirement notice Monday. His last day as police chief will be June 30.
    Additionally, Rick Rieken and David Schoning announced they will run independently in the November election.
