Judge James Drew set accused murderer Ronald Rand’s bond at $1 million Wednesday morning, according to online court records.
Drew’s decision came after a bond review hearing Tuesday. Rand’s attorney originally requested that his bond get lowered to $10,000 and that he be released to his daughter, however, the prosecution asked the judge to set Rand’s bond at $1 million.
Rand was arrested and charged with First Degree Murder Dec. 13 after allegedly killing his girlfriend, Michelle Key, 51, with a shotgun following a domestic dispute at his Hampton home. According to a criminal complaint, Rand admitted to the shooting when police arrived on scene.
He had been held in jail without bond since the incident occurred. Rand was originally held at the Hardin County Jail, but was moved to Cerro Gordo County late last month to be closer to his court-appointed attorney.
First Degree Murder is a Class A felony punishable by life in prison.
