DES MOINES - A broken foot his junior season hindered AGWSR senior Austin Heitland.

All of that was put in the past when the sprinter claimed the Class 1A 400-meter title Thursday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

It was a good day for the Cougars as Heitland also qualified for both sprint finals as well and teammate Clay Meinders finished state runner-up in the shot put for the second year in a row.

"It feels great," Heitland said after winning the 400. "Ever since I was a freshman I really wanted to get here and be a state champion. I got all-state football, all sub-state basketball but state champion is what I really (wanted). I'm glad I got it."
