Saturday was a bittersweet day for decades of Hansell graduates as they celebrated the 100th and final Hansell Alumni Banquet.
More than 100 graduates as far back as the class of 1942 gathered to celebrate the occasion.
Clarence Moore, a 1958 graduate and president of the Hansell Alumni Association, said the decision to end the reunion was difficult but done due to the declining number of living graduates.
“We were losing about a class a year,” he said. “I hate to see it go,” said class of 1948 member Carl Heeren. “But that’s jut part of life.”
While attendees were sad to see the reunion end, a casual observer wouldn’t have picked up on any signs of sorrow. Handshakes, hugs, smiles and stories from the past filled the Hansell Community Center.
“It’s a joy to see people I went to school with for four years,” said 1942 graduate Stuart Riggins, who rode the bus 14 miles two times a day from his family farm near Dougherty to school. “It’s nice to greet everyone and share memories with the people I went to school with.”
